Carter sat at the two high, swinging his feet like a little kid as he looked around. A sad and quiet sense of loss welled inside him. He felt disconnected from everyone around him, and suddenly understood all too well that old cliché about standing in a crowded room and feeling completely alone. Without a friend to hang with, Carter didn’t know what to do with himself.

When he’d been in his early twenties, he’d never had a problem going to bars alone. He’d talked with complete strangers, danced to nearly every song, and more often than not, left the bar with a few phone numbers or IM profiles. But now that he was closing in on thirty, Carter had come to realize he didn’t enjoy going out on his own. He really missed Will, more than he’d thought he would. They were the perfect wingmen: able to make each other laugh about the guys who were out of reach, and prime each other’s egos before approaching someone. If Will was there with him, Carter would have someone to talk with about his confusing feelings for Harry. And so sitting there, alone, in the middle of the Cupid Crawl, Carter realized Valentine’s Day wasn’t the same without Will.

He might as well get used to it though. Now that Will was married, from here on out, all of his Valentine’s Days were going to be booked up. And Will most likely wouldn’t want to hang out at bars very much anymore either, not with someone as hot as Rex waiting at home for him. Sure there might be some weekends Will would be free when Rex would be on the road performing, but Carter could practically predict Will’s desire to stay home on the weekends.

Maybe Carter and Will could start getting together more outside of bars. Play video games or watch movies or learn to cook together. With a start, Carter realized those things he’d been imagining were usually activities couples would do together. And he and Will were not a couple in that sense of the word. So, while it would have been nice to spend more quality time with his best friend, Carter didn’t see how doing that would help him find someone special for himself.

Someone came up beside him and he found Ivy standing beside him, flask in hand.

“I’m beginning to think you really are an Angel of Death, the way you just sort of show up,” Carter said.

Ivy grinned. “Nervous?”

“No,” Carter said, then shrugged. “A little, maybe.”

“Anyone here you fancy?” Ivy asked.

Carter’s thoughts went immediately to Harry, but he kept his expression neutral as he said, “There are some attractive people here. I’m still on the fence about some. How about you? Find anyone to juxtapose with your darkness?”

Ivy sneered. “My darkness is just fine on its own. All I’ve seen here are guys who spend too much time at the gym or not enough time, and girls with too much hair or five heads.”

“Five heads?” Carter asked with a laugh.
